Tyler went on her first field trip today. It was a day of firsts - first field trip, first bus ride, first time at a rock quarry! The place was surprisingly cool (I was asked to chaperone, so I was able to enjoy all the "firsts" firsthand!) As we entered the quarry, our tour guide (Miss Cindy) joined our bus and stayed with us for the duration. The bus drove us down into the quarry, where we saw the entrance to the mine (we didn't get to go in), and saw all the rock coming out of the mine and getting processed into different sizes of finished rock. The finished rocks ranged in size and therefore are sold for different purposes. Miss Cindy explained that some rock is used under roads, some is used in asphalt, and the finest rock (which is like sand) is used by Nicor to bury their pipes. Once down in the quarry, the kids got off the bus to explore and even got to collect rocks to take home. The rocks are limestone, but they found really beautiful crystals too. You can see in the bottom picture the entire class fit into the scoop of the bulldozer - that's one big bulldozer.
On the way into the quarry our bus stopped on the truck scale and we got weighed (we weighed 22,780 lbs.) On the way out of the quarry, the bus was weighed again. Our departing weight was 22,910, which meant the kids on our bus collected and kept 130 lbs. of rocks!
What a fantastic day of "firsts."
