What a Week!

We received this letter this week from Tyler's school district informing us that she was accepted into the gifted program for both math and language arts (the students scoring in the top 10% district-wide are chosen) for next year.  I talked to the school principal (Jeff Schafermeyer) yesterday to get further details on the program and learned that Tyler's school has a disproportionately large number of students that were accepted into the program (26 out of 125 students).  All 26 students will be in the same class for 3rd grade and but will be split up for 4th and 5th grades.  He also said that math will be taught by a teacher other than their regular, homeroom teacher.  Mr. Schafermeyer confirmed that the gifted class basically skips the 3rd grade curriculum, so he agreed that working on third grade math over the summer will help to ensure she's prepared.  After reviewing Ty's math scores on the CogAT and Discovery tests, he said that he thinks she should do just fine with 4th grade math.  We'll concentrate on multiplication and division over the summer so she's ready for the challenge.

Separately, yesterday Tyler got 10" of her hair cut off to donate to an organization called Children With Hair Loss.  Children With Hair Loss is a non-profit organization that receives hair donations, has wigs made, and then gives the wigs (and lots of hair supplies) to children with medical hair loss, free of charge.  Ty's new "do" is super cute, and we're sure a little girl in need will also be super cute with a wig made from Ty's pretty hair.
