Today brought some bad news with Tyler's progress. The doctors thought that they may be ready to clamp the chest drain tube (in preparation of complete removal) but unfortunately, an x-ray showed that more fluid is collecting by her lung. They are not sure why the fluid is collecting in her chest and not draining into her chest tube, but it's not (she only had 4 CC's of drainage in 24 hours). So, as of this afternoon, they are discontinuing her feeding altogether for two weeks (she'll receive protein, fat [and something else I can't remember] through her IV during that time.) The theory is that her feeding is causing the lymphatic fluid to continually regenerate. So, by discontinuing the feeding they hope that the source of the fluid leakage will repair itself, at which time they'll resume the feeding. They are also putting her breathing canula back into her nose today because her breathing has been strained today, probably because of the fluid that has collected by her lung. This is truly a heartbreak.
While my brain tells me that there will be ups and downs with Tyler's healing process and that medicine is no exact science (but rather one of trial and error), the mom in me is extremely upset and dissapointed. I suppose you could call it a reality check.
The good news of the day is that Ty's irregular heartbeat seems much less frequent now. They are doing another echocardiogram this afternoon which hopefully will confirm the improvement with her heart.
We'll continue to post updates as we get them. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and ongoing support. PK and I really appreciate it.
XoXoXo
